al-Qaeda al-Qa·e·da, al-Qaida /æl kɑːˈiːdə, -ˈkaɪdə/ a terrorist organization formed in the 1980s by Osama Bin Laden and other leaders. At first, al-Qaeda members fought against soldiers from the Soviet Union who had taken control of Afghanistan. After the Soviets left Afghanistan, al-Qaeda started a campaign of attacks against western countries, including the attack on New York City on September 11,2001 when two planes flew into the World Trade Center and destroyed it.
