Stockhausen, Karlheinz Karlheinz StockhausenStock·hau·sen, Karl·heinz /ˈʃtɒkhaʊzən, ˈkɑːlhaɪnts $ ˈʃtɑːk-, ˈkɑːrl-/ (1928-2007) a German composer who was famous for his avant garde (=extremely modern, especially in a way that seems strange) music. He used sounds of wood, glass, and metal that he had recorded, as well as ordinary instruments. He wrote more than 300 works in various styles including operas, pieces for orchestra, and electronic music. He was an important member of the Darmstadt School of composers in the 1950s and 1960s.
